DOT issues final hazmat cargo tank rules

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Special Programs Administration has issued the final form of its hazardous materials requirements for cargo tanks, incorporating recommendations made during a period of public comment.

Among changes requested by industry groups, the DOT modified the definition of a cargo tank to include “solids and semi-solids among materials for which a cargo tank may be used for transportation.”

Overruling industry comments, the DOT stipulated that name plates and maximum lading density markings appear on certain cargo tanks.

For the full regulations, see the Federal Register , Sept. 3, Vol. 68, No. 170, p. 52363.

While voluntary compliance began Wednesday, the rules go into effect Oct. 1.
