Canada sets treated wood packaging enforcement for Sept. 16

The Canadian government will start enforcement of an internationally approved wood packaging treatment standard, starting Sept. 16.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CIFA) said the rule applies to all wood packaging materials, including dunnage, pallets or crating, entering Canada from all areas except the United States.

Wood packaging arriving in Canada on and after Sept. 16 must be either heat treated or fumigated using methyl bromide. The treated wood packaging should be marked with a universally recognized symbol or another mark approved by CIFA.

The Canadian enforcement deadline follows a similar mandate issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Department of Agriculture (For more details about the CBP compliance deadline, read the September American Shipper, page 34).
