Two cargo facilities at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport have been expanded to accommodate larger aircraft.
A $23.1 million expansion project at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) to lengthen two cargo facilities in order to handle larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 747-8, is officially completed, the Port of Seattle said in a statement.
The airport’s Cargo 2 facility expansion was completed in August 2014. Sea-Tac then began expansion on its Cargo 6 facility, which was completed in mid-June.
About $12.7 billion worth of air freight is exported through Sea-Tac Airport annually, and about $13.6 billion is imported via the Pacific Northwest gateway.
In 2014, the airport saw an 11.8 percent increase in cargo tonnage, led by a 21.6 percent increase for international freight.
“In just the last year, we have seen a ten percent increase in the number of very large freighters coming to Sea-Tac, showing that our investments have been right in line with industry needs and will benefit farmers and exporters across Washington State,” Port of Seattle Commissioner John Creighton said in a statement.
