“K” Line receives LNG carrier
Japanese ocean carrier Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. has received the 143,000-cubic-meter Moss-type liquid natural gas carrier “Arctic Discoverer” from Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding.
The vessel, co-owned by “K” Line with Statoil, Mitsui & Co. and Iino Kaiun, was constructed to move LNG from the “Sn'hvit” project in the Barents Sea, the world’s northernmost LNG development.
The project will export about 4.2 million tons of LNG to Spain and the United States each year, “K” Line said.
A delay to the start-up date of the project will result in the “Arctic Discoverer” going on short-term charter to an unnamed party. Eventually, the vessel will be chartered to “Sn'hvit Sellers” comprising of Statoil and other energy companies for a period of 20 years.
The “Arctic Discoverer” is the sixth LNG vessel to be managed by “K” Line and will bring its LNG carrier fleet to 30.
