Argentina joins U.S. CSI program
U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced that Argentina will be the first South American country to participate in the Container Security Initiative (CSI).
On May 9, the Argentine government signed a declaration of principles to become involved in CSI.
“The expansion of CSI to Buenos Aires will provide a strategic advantage for targeting containers transshipped through the port,” CBP said in a May 11 statement.
CSI was launched in January 2002 in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. CSI has been accepted globally as a way to help secure containerized shipments against terrorist intrusion. There are 36 operational CSI ports in the program scattered throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and North America.
“CSI will continue to expand to strategic locations around the world,” CBP said.
