PANAMA CANAL POSTS FEWER ACCIDENTS
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced on Thursday that the Canal has set a new safety record relating to maritime accidents.
From 2001 to 2002, 34 such accidents occurred out of a total of 26,678 transits of the Canal. For fiscal years 1999-2000, 56 maritime accidents occurred.
In the year 2000, there were 29 accidents involving vessels. In 2001 and thus far in 2002, only 17 have been reported.
