Port of Corpus Christi starts loading grain for Cuba
The first two vessels operating under a cooperative agreement between the Port of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Alimport, Cuba’s import agency, will begin loading wheat for Cuba in Corpus Christi today.
The 'Antilles V' and 'Antilles II' will each load about 10,000 tons of hard red winter wheat at the Archer Daniel Midland’s facility.
The Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act of 2000 allows U.S. companies to sell medicine, humanitarian and agricultural products to Cuba.
In July, the port of Corpus Christi and Alimport signed a memorandum of understanding to open trade relations between Cuba and the U.S. port, and to increase purchases by Alimport of agricultural products under contracts with regional suppliers.
The port said it continues to work with Alimport on shipments of South Texas-based products such as cottons, grains and meats.
