Port of Virginia volume hits record again
October was the busiest month in the history of the Port of Virginia as 188,539 TEUs were handled at the general cargo terminals that line the Elizabeth and James rivers, the port said in a statement Wednesday.
The port has also set volume records the previous two months: the port handled 172,838 TEUs in August and 170,620 in September. Thus far in 2005, the port has moved more than 1.6 million TEUs, the same volume moved in all of 2003, while year-to-date cargo volumes are up 9.8 percent.
Breakbulk volume at Virginia International Terminals was up 10.6 percent in October for all three marine terminals: Norfolk International Terminals, Portsmouth Marine Terminal and Newport News Marine Terminal.
NIT container volumes were up 25.9 percent when compared with the same month last year. Year-to-date, TEU throughput is up 17 percent. At PMT, the breakbulk volume was up 16 percent when compared with last October and year-to-date volume is up 35.8 percent. At NNMT, the year-to-date container volumes have increased 10.2 percent and the breakbulk volume was up 10 percent.
