Support builds for U.S.-led WTO biotech case against EU
It’s not just the United States that wants the European Union to eliminate trade barriers to biotech crops.
Other countries support the World Trade Organization case against the EU’s five-year moratorium on approval of food and feed products enhanced through biotechnology. These countries are Australia, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, and Uruguay.
Large agricultural commodity groups, such as the American Farm Bureau Federation and the American Soybean Association, applaud the support of the WTO case by other agricultural commodity exporting nations.
“This issue should not be viewed strictly as a U.S.-E.U. trade dispute since other countries also want to ensure that science-based determinations are applied to regulatory decisions,” said Dwain Ford, president of the American Soybean Association.
