Rep. Crenshaw calls on Congress to enhance port security

U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla., speaking during a tour of the Jacksonville Port Authority, urged Congress to fund additional homeland security enhancements at U.S. seaports.

“Better coordination, better tracking, better monitoring of cargo coming into the U.S. will do much to advance our homeland security,” Crenshaw said.

The U.S. has 95,000 miles of coastline and 361 seaports, the congressman noted. “Our work is cut out for us. Advancing technology today could prevent a tragedy tomorrow,” said Crenshaw, a Jacksonville native.

Crenshaw reviewed a pilot project proposed by the container shipping Horizon Lines for a global container tracking system that would provide visibility of containers from initial booking through arrival at their final destination.
