SENATOR EXITS U.S./SOUTH AMERICA TRADE

Senator Lines is pulling out of one more trade — the shipping route between the United States and the East Coast of South America trade.

The move to cut back the South American service follows Senator’s announcement that it would terminate its transpacific and transatlantic container services at the end of the year to focus on more profitable markets.

The carrier’s last sailings between the U.S. East Coast and the East Coast of South America are at the end of December, southbound, and mid-December, northbound.

The carrier, owned by Hanjin Shipping, also notified the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission that it would resign from the Independent Carriers Alliance, a carrier group in the U.S./East Coast of South America trade that also includes Hanjin Shipping, CMA CGM, Montemar and Zim Israel Navigation.

Hanjin will assume the rights and obligations of its sister company under the Independent Carriers Alliance.

A spokesman for Senator at its headquarters in Germany said that the carrier is expected to announce details of a restructuring plan next week.
