DOCKWORKERS CONTINUE STRIKES IN EUROPEAN PORTS
Dockworkers went on strike in ports of Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal and Finland on Monday to protest against the port liberalization directive of the European Commission.
According to union sources, further short actions were scheduled yesterday (Tuesday) in ports of Cyprus and Greece.
A spokesman for the port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port, said that the port has not experienced any strikes.
The strikes were called by the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the European Transport Workers’ Federation and were timed to put pressure on the European Parliament, which is considering the port legislation.
Representatives of dockworkers also demonstrated in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday.
