International Paper inks long-term shipping deal with NYK
Stamford, Conn.-based International Paper Co., the world’s largest paper manufacturer, has signed a long-term contract with NYK Bulkship (USA) Inc. for the continuous shipment of wood chips from Brazil to the United States.
Under the three-year contract, which has an option for extension, International Paper will ship about one million tons of eucalyptic chips a year and NYK will assign two wood chip carriers exclusively to the operation. The vessels will shuttle between Brazil and the U.S. Gulf, making about 25 voyages a year.
NYK said International Paper has long been involved in a eucalyptus-planting project in northern Brazil with the object of supplying wood chips, produced there, to its paper mills in the U.S.
The contract with NYK follows a successful trial transport of eucalyptic chips from Brazil to the U.S., undertaken last fall.
