Luisa Anderson of Miami Gardens, Fla., 40, was driving a golf cart through the Sun Terminals container yard at Port Everglades when it collided with a yard mule truck, according to a statement from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
A Sun Terminals employee was killed in a truck collision at Port Everglades Monday, according to a statement from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO).
Luisa Anderson of Miami Gardens, Fla., 40, was driving a golf cart through the Sun Terminals container yard at Port Everglades when it collided with a yard mule truck at an intersection not regulated by stop signs or traffic signals.
Anderson “was ejected from the golf cart and run over by the truck,” BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby wrote in the office’s report. Emergency responders from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue declared her dead at the scene.
The yard mule was driven by Theoplous Wright, 55, an employee of Crowley Maritime. Port Everglades spokesperson Ellen Kennedy told local newspaper, the Sun Sentinal, Wright was “very shook up” by the incident.
“The whole port community is grieving for the family,” said Kennedy, adding that Rev. Ronald Perkins, a chaplain for Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and at Seafarers’ House, is available for counseling.
Ogelsby said BSO traffic homicide detectives are investigating the incident, as is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the primary federal agency charged with the enforcement of workplace safety and health legislation.
But the fatal incident wasn’t even the only truck crash a the port on Monday.
Earlier that day, a longshoreman working for Florida International Terminal was injured when his yard mule fell on its side.
The truck was carrying a container from the Hamburg Sud boxship Elisabeth-S, which was loaded with granite and iron bars, according to Kennedy.
“The truck driver was in the cab when he was hurt,” she said. “He struck a piece of heavy equipment, part of a crane, and the truck rolled on its side.”
Kennedy said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took the injured driver to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
