Steel is trade issue in Canada, too

Canada is reviewing whether to assess duties on steel from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Romania because it is being dumped at below-market prices.

The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency said two steel types are being sold at an average of 59.5 percent of the fair market price. The decision follows an interim conclusion Sept. 11. A provisional duty is now in place and the Canadian International Trade Tribunal will determine whether the dumping has harmed Canadian producer Algoma Steel Inc. and impose an antidumping duty on imports.

President Bush recently lifted steel tariffs in the United States designed to protect the U.S. industry from imported steel.
