Yang Ming plans to order more ships for intra-Asia

Yang Ming announced that it plans to order eight 1,730-TEU containerships for the intra-Asia trade, in addition to four 1,500-TEU vessels ordered in May of this year for the same trade.

The Taiwanese carrier cited the “vigorous growth in intra-Asian liner market.”

“Since 1999, the intra-Asia service routes have become part of the world’s most brisk container operations,” Yang Ming said in a statement.

Volume in the intra-Asia trade is expected to keep growing at a steady 6.5 percent rate each year until the end of 2007, the shipping line said. In 2003, intra-Asian container traffic accounted for about 18 percent of global box volume.
