Record for single ship box moves at Felixstowe
The port of Felixstowe reported that a single ship call at the port accounted for 4,077 container moves, believed to be a record number of containers handled on a single ship at a British port.
The high-volume call was that of China Shipping Container Lines’ “CSCL Europe,” an 8,500-TEU containership. The “CSCL Europe” was worked by the port’s newest “ultra post-Panamax” quay cranes, capable of handling containers stowed 22-wide.
“With the advent of such mega-ships as the 'CSCL Europe,' it is imperative that the port of Felixstowe is able to provide the necessary deepwater quay to accommodate them,” said Richard Pearson, managing director of Hutchison Ports (UK) Ltd., which owns the port of Felixstowe. “We are pushing ahead with our proposals to bring on stream additional deepwater container handling facilities at both Felixstowe and Harwich,” he added.
