U.S. URGES TRADING PARTNERS TO DEVELOP INTEGRATED TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

Acting Maritime Administrator John Graykowski urged U.S. trading partners to develop integrated transportation systems in order to benefit from the expected surge in trade over the next 20 years.

Addressing a maritime panel of an international transportation symposium sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Graykowski urged other nations to follow the U.S.'s lead in developing a system that fits together in “an absolutely perfect fashion.”

All nations must look at transportation as a system, “not just as parts,” Graykowski said. Otherwise the United States and her trading partners will not be able to keep up with the expected 200 to 300 percent trade growth over the next two decades, he said.

“Where we are today is not where we want to be five, 10 or 20 years from now,” he said. “If the U.S. system is not working, then the consequences will be felt worldwide. That same logic is compelling for every trading nation.”
