SWEDEN JOINS U.S. CUSTOMSÆ CONTAINER SECURITY INITIATIVE
The government of Sweden has agreed to participate in the U.S. Customs Services' Container Security Initiative, according to a Customs statement.
Under terms of the agreement, U.S. Customs officers will be stationed at the port of Goteborg, the first European port outside the top 20 mega ports to join CSI.
CSI is an initiative designed to prevent the smuggling of terrorist weapons on oceangoing cargo containers by getting major ports to follow uniform security procedures and information sharing practices.
Sweden's move comes as the European Commission recently implored member states to negotiate transportation security measures with the United States as a group rather than individually.
Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom already are CSI partner states.
