USMEF develops exports promotion program for small meat shippers

The U.S. Meat Export Federation has developed a branded products promotion program to help small beef and pork shippers enter overseas markets.

“Beef and pork are increasingly sold less on a commodity basis and more under the aegis of a brand that consumers can recognize, remember and associate with a particular quality or taste,” the Denver-based federation said.

From Oct. 1 to June 30, the federation will accept applications from U.S. companies interested in receiving funds to promote branded U.S. meat products in international markets. Applications will be accepted as long as funds are available, the federation said.

Funds may be used to help companies attend trade fairs and offset the costs of promotion materials.

Eligible companies must have fewer than 500 employees, or be a producer, cooperative or association. Companies receiving funds from the federation will be assessed a 5 percent administrative fee to participate in the program. USMEF also requires a $100 application fee to accompany a company’s request for funding. These funds will be applied to the 5 percent fee, the federation said.
