UPS ASKS DOT TO INVESTIGATE DEUTSCHE POST-AIRBORNE DEAL

United Parcel Service, the Atlanta-based package delivery and supply chain solutions provider, has asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate the recently announced acquisition of Airborne Inc. of Seattle by DHL, the express mail subsidiary of Deutsche Post AG.

UPS said the $1.05 billion DHL-Airborne acquisition raises questions about the degree of control that Deutsche Post would have over the U.S. domestic express package and cargo market.

Deutsche Post is 69-percent owned by the German government. Long eager for U.S. expansion, Deutsche Post has said that Airborne, the third-ranked U.S. overnight package delivery service, would fill out DP’s global network.

“UPS urges that the department’s review of this transaction be transparent, with all interested parties being able to review and comment on all relevant documents,” UPS said in its filing.
