CANADIAN FREIGHT CONFERENCES TO RAISE EASTBOUND RATES

   Carriers of the Canada U.K. Freight Conference and the Canadian Continental Eastbound Freight Conference said Monday they would initiate a 'freight rate restoration program' on eastbound rates, effective April 1 and Oct. 1.”

   On April 1, the conferences will increase general cargo rates by $50 for a 20-foot container and $75 for a 40-foot container. Refrigerated cargo rates will increase $75 for a 20-foot container and $100 for a 40-foot container.

   The Oct. 1 increase will be announced later, the conferences said.

   Earlier this month, the conference carriers notified shippers of a plan to increase westbound rates by $150 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot box, also effective April 1.

   Carriers of the Canada/North Europe conferences are Atlantic Container Line, Canada Maritime, Cast, Hapag-Lloyd and Orient Overseas Container Line.

   The Trans-Atlantic Conference Agreement also said member carriers would implement increases in tariff rates of $400 per 20-foot container, $500 per 40-footer and $25 per weight measure, effective April 1.
