INBOUND CONTAINERS TO LOS ANGELES SOARED BY 26% IN JUNE

The port of Los Angeles provided further evidence of the continuing strength of the eastbound transpacific market, by reporting a 26-percent jump in the number of loaded inbound containers for June.

Inbound traffic amounted to 291,966 TEUs in June, up from 232,202 in June of 2001.

Loaded outbound containers from Los Angeles, consisting mainly of U.S. exports to Asia, rose by 8 percent in June, to 95,285 TEUs.

Including empty containers, the port of Los Angeles handled a total of 536,461 TEUs in June, up 23 percent from the 435,245 TEUs moved in June of last year.

For the first six months of the year, container traffic at the

Californian port increased by 19 percent, to 2.8 million TEUs, from 2.4 million during the same period in 2001.

The substantial increase in volume was partly caused by advance shipments made by U.S. importers before July 1 in case of port labor disruptions at U.S. West Coast ports.
