Houston garners new gantry cranes

The Bayport Container Terminal received three neo-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes this week.

The Port of Houston’s Bayport Container Terminal on Wednesday received three new neo-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes.
The STS cranes are part of a $100 million investment in the terminal and are part of two crane shipments for a total of eight cranes to arrive at the port this week. The other five cranes in the order included rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes.
The Houston Port Authority said the three STS cranes together cost about $35 million and the RTG cranes cost about $2 million apiece. Construction of Bayport’s Wharf No. 2 is an estimated $35 million project.
The three newest STS cranes will bring the port’s total number of these cranes to 26 operating at the Bayport and Barbours Cut container terminals.
The delivery of the five new RTGs is part of an order of 10 cranes. The next five RTGs are scheduled to arrive in Houston next month.
