Port of Houston commissioner will be asked Wednesday to authorize construction of a new “amenities building” at the Bayport container and cruise terminal that potentially would use an unusual, if appropriate, construction technique.

The port is considering building the 5,700-square-foot structure using Intermodal Steel Building Units (ISBUs). That’s a fancy term for recycled shipping containers, modified to be the primary structural system above the foundation. The building would have offices and break areas.

Commissioners will also be asked to award a $33.8 million contract to Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co. for three dockside electric container cranes for Bayport.
