FAA FINES SMIT INTERNATIONAL FOR HAZMAT VIOLATION

The Federal Aviation Administration has fined Dutch shipper Smit
International $80,000 for violating U.S. hazardous materials air shipping
rules.
The FAA alleges that Smit shipped five combustion engines and two oxygen
canisters that were improperly prepared for transportation and mislabeled. The shipment
moved from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to Miami aboard an El Al Israel Airlines aircraft
in 1998.
A ramp agent noticed flames and smoke coming from one of the shipped pallets
during unloading at Miami International Airport.
Smit has 30 days to reply to the FAA.
