JAXPORT sets new box throughput record

The strong growth was largely due to an increase container trade between the port and Asia, which surged 19 percent year-over-year to 336,791 TEUs.

   JAXPORT transported 968,279 TEUs during fiscal year 2016, which ended Sept. 30, beating the previous record of 936,972 TEUs set in 2014, the port said Monday.

   Automobile imports for fiscal year 2016 sped up 19 percent from a year prior to 467,898 imported vehicles. However, vehicle volumes overall remained steady with more than 636,000 units moved throughout the fiscal year.
   Breakbulk cargo volumes rose 22 percent year-over-year with nearly 888,000 tons shipped, largely driven by growth in paper imports from Finland and wood pulp imports from Brazil.
   Meanwhile, revenues rose 6 percent year-over-year to $59.7 million.
