MAERSK SEALAND, MED SHIPPING EXTEND COOPERATION WITH SAFBANK
Maersk Sealand and Mediterranean Shipping Co. have made a vessel-sharing agreement with SafBank to operate a joint multipurpose service between the
Americas and Southern Africa.
The three carriers will effectively take over a service that was previously operated by SafBank and Lykes Lines. Lykes recently pulled out of the service to launch a competiting Americas/Southern Africa multipurpose
operation.
Maersk Sealand, Mediterranean Shipping Co. and SafBank will operate four multipurpose vessels with an 18-day frequency. The rotation of the service is Durban in South Africa; Salvador and Cabedelo in Brazil; La Guaira in Venezuela; Veracruz in Mexico; Mobile, New Orleans, Houston, Savannah and Baltimore in the U.S.; and Cape Town and Durban in South Africa.
SafBank, Maersk Sealand and Mediterranean Shipping will market the service separately. SafBank is majority-owned by Safmarine, a sister company of Maersk Sealand.
SafBank, Maersk Sealand and Mediterranean Shipping will continue to run a joint weekly container service between the U.S. and South Africa.
