Union Pacific wants fines dropped

Union Pacific Corp. has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Omaha, Neb. that seeks to have $38 million in penalties imposed by the federal government waived.

The Associated Press reports that the fines are related to 42 incidents since 2002 in which agents found drugs stashed in railcars as they crossed from Mexico into the United States.

The railroad says it does not gain control the railcars until after they are inspected by customs agents and should not be liable for drugs secreted in cars in Mexico.
