EUROPE/SOUTH AFRICA CARRIERS INCREASE RATES
Shipping lines of the Europe Southern Africa Conference have announced a plan to increase southbound and northbound freight rates, with effect from Jan. 1.
Southbound rates from northern Europe to southern Africa will go up by $250 per TEU. Northbound prices will increase by $200 per TEU.
A spokesman for the conference said that the price rises are part of a plan to restore rates to previous levels.
Traffic volumes have increased in the northern Europe/southern Africa trade.
The Southern Africa Europe Container Service consortium of conference carriers Safmarine, Maersk Sealand, Deutsche Afrika-Linien and P&O Nedlloyd has announced the launch, this month, of a second weekly container service.
