Baltimore port, operators receive $5.5 million in security grants

   The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded $5.5 million to local governments and private companies in Maryland for enhanced security at the port of Baltimore.

   The Maryland Port Administration will receive $4.28 million, which it plans to use for improved terminal access control, perimeter security, and improved cargo and information security systems.

   The private maritime terminal operators Liquid Transfer Terminals, Westway Terminal, Motiva Enterprises and Rukert Terminals will get a total of $1.3 million. In particular, Westway Terminal will receive a $350,000 grant for physical enhancements. Westway Terminal said the grant will enable it to improve its perimeter fencing, install a biometric identification system, hire more guards, and enhance the tracking of incoming ships.
