Tanjung Pelepas tops 4 million TEUs in 2004
The Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas increased its container throughput 15.2 percent to handle over 4 million TEUs for 2004.
The 4.02 million TEUs the port handled in 2004 compared to 3.49 million TEUs in 2003.
The port said local cargo increased 12 percent from 150,000 TEUs in 2003 to 168,000 TEUs in 2004. Ship calls rose 1.3 percent to 3,193 vessels in 2004, compared to 3,148 in 2003.
The port of Tanjung Pelepas has eight berths of 360 meters (1,181 feet) each totaling 2.88 kilometers (9,449 feet) in length with a container storage capacity of 110,000 TEUs. New facilities under construction and due for completion in mid-2005, will increase the storage capacity 40 percent to 154,000 TEUs.
