PACIFIC CARRIERS EXTEND SUSPENSION PERIOD OF JAPAN/U.S. CONFERENCE

   The shipping lines of the now dormant Japan/U.S.
Eastbound Freight Conference have extended the suspension period of the agreement until
July 31, 2000.
   APL, Hapag-Lloyd Container Line, "K" Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines,
Maersk Sealand (previously Maersk Line and Sea-Land Service), NYK Line, Orient Overseas
Container Line, P&O Nedlloyd and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines have effectively stopped
the activities of the conference since Aug. 1, 1999, shortly after the U.S. Ocean Shipping
Reform Act was enacted.
   There is currently no active conference in the eastbound and westbound
transpacific trades
