SOPKO NAMED DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY AT EXPORT ADMINISTRATION

    John F. Sopko has been appointed deputy assistant secretary for the
U.S. Commerce Department’s Export Administration.
   In this position, Sopko will oversee the agency’s export enforcement
work in the areas of dual-use technology and anti-boycott provisions of the Export
Administration Act. He was formerly the agency’s chief counsel for special matters.
    Sopko began his career in the late 1970s as a prosecutor in the Justice
Department’s Organized Crime and Racketeering Section. Then he spent 15 years on Capitol
Hill working for Sen. Sam Nunn and as the senior minority counsel on the Senate
Governmental Affairs Committee. From 1994 to 1996, Sopko directed an international
investigation on nuclear weapons proliferation.
