Port of Long Beach sets import record in September
The Port of Long Beach said its import container volume in September exceeded the previous port record set in August.
Inbound containers for the month totaled 313,460 TEUs, up 22.6 percent from the same month last year. The port handled 97,009 TEUs in outbound containers up 27.3 percent over September 2004. Empty containers handled rose 22.9 percent to 199,800 TEUs. Total container volume in September increased 23.4 percent to 610,269 TEUs.
For the nine month period ended Sept. 30, containers shipped through Long Beach rose 24 percent to a record 6.64 million TEUs.
“The gains stemmed from strength in the U.S. economy, a continuing shift in manufacturing to Asia, particularly China, and the introduction of more 8,000-TEU ships in Long Beach,” the port said with regard to the annual growth.
