Voting matters

With the first presidential debate of 2020 in the books, I am reminded of our most basic right that we enjoy as free citizens of this country. A right that I do not take lightly and one that you should not either. The reality is – you can choose whether to exercise that right by voting this November.

We have all heard “this is the most important election ever,” and that is usually true but only in the sense that every country’s national election is important to the social well-being of its citizens. We are privileged in this country to be able to take part in the political process. Citizens of many countries are still fighting for their right to vote.

Whether you chose to vote or not is your right, but I wonder why some do not vote. Do they not care about our country as a citizen? Or perhaps they think their vote doesn’t count? Or maybe they feel they are not educated enough about what is going on around them?

Frankly, I do not care who you vote for, but I do care that you vote. There are many ways to vote these days, depending on what state you live in (mail-in, absentee, in-person). Early in my trucking career, I found myself away from home one Election Day and I vowed from that day forward I would always vote absentee. So, for 25 years or so, I have done so. For the 2020 election, I have already voted for the candidates that I want to win.

Please VOTE for whatever candidates you want, but VOTE!

In the words of President FDR:

“Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves, and the only way they could do this is by not voting.”

See you at the polls,
