A.P. Moller names latest post-Panamax ship
A.P. Moller-Maersk Saturday named a new post-Panamax containership the “Gunvor Maersk,” at the group’s Odense shipyard in Denmark.
The “Gunvor Maersk” is the third in a series of “S-class” ships with a declared capacity of 7,000 TEUs, but is widely believed to have a nominal capacity closer to 9,000 TEUs.
The new ship’s dimensions are larger than those of the current largest declared ship, the 8,750-TEU “Colombo Express” operated by Hapag-Lloyd. The “Gunvor Maersk,” like sisterships “Gudrun Maersk” and “Grete Maersk,” has an overall length of 367 meters (1,204 feet) and breadth of 42.8 meters (140 feet) with a deadweight of 115,700 tons. The “Colombo Express” has an overall length of 330 meters (1,083 feet), breadth of 43 meters (141 feet) and deadweight of 102,000 tons.
The ship is the fourth new vessel completed by the Odense shipyard this year.
