AAPA will hold security seminar July 27-29
The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) will hold a Port Security and Safety Seminar July 27-29 at the Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel and Conference Center in East Rutherford, N.J., hosted by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Topics to be discussed include building a port authority police force, combating port terrorism and cargo theft, radiation safety measures, National Incident Management System training, and a progress report on the Transportation Workers Identity Card (TWIC) initiative.
For more information, including an agenda for the seminar, visit http://www.aapa-ports.org or call Ed O'Connell, AAPA membership services director, at (703) 706-4709.
In a related development, Kurt Nagle, AAPA's president and chief executive officer, praised the fiscal year 2006 funding bill markup by the U.S. Senate's Appropriation Committee on June 16, which approved $5.29 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers' civil work program.
The Bush administration's Civil Works budget recommendation 'was a paltry $4.51 billion, which would have been 4 percent less than last year's appropriation,' Nagle said in a statement. 'AAPA and our member ports were deeply concerned that, had the administration's proposed budget been adopted, the channels and harbors that ships depend on for moving people and freight would be severely compromised.'
The AAPA, founded in 1912 and based in Alexandria, Va., represents 150 port authorities in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
