AMERICAN BACKS OFF FUEL SURCHARGE
American Airlines has backed away from plans to add an additional 5-cents-per-kilogram fuel surcharge on certain international shipments, effective May 1.
American said it scrapped the plan because of the recent stabilization of fuel prices.
The carrier, which has greatly increased its cargo capacity with B777s in recent months, said it will not add another surcharge to U.S. origin shipments destined for Europe, Asia and Latin America. The additional 5-cents-per-kilo surcharge would have added to a 10-cent surcharge implemented in February.
The surcharge on U.S. origin shipments to Mexico and the Caribbean, however, will rise to 10 cents per kilo.
Effective May 1, all U.S. origin international shipments will be subject to a 10-cent surcharge. American said no other changes are planned.
