Amerijet acquires Antillas Air

Amerijet International said it has agreed to purchase Antillas Air, a U.S. cargo airline serving Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Amerijet, which serves the Caribbean, Mexico and Latin America, said no changes will be made initially to Antillas Air's routes and operations. Antillas founder and owner Constantino Gorospe was named managing director of Amerijet's new division, Amerijet Central America.

Amerijet said the acquisition gives its customers greater access to Central America, while Antillas customers will benefit from Amerijet's international network of interline agreements to move cargo around the world.

Antillas acts as a cargo division for other airlines that lack their own cargo aircraft. It provides aircraft, crews, maintenance and insurance under so-called wet lease arrangements. Antillas operates 20 flights per week from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and Miami International. In fiscal 2002, Antillas Air carried 45 million pounds of cargo.
