Another Reserve Fleet ship on way to scrap yard

The “Shirley Lykes,” a 43-year-old vessel that was part of the U.S. National Defense Reserve Fleet, is leaving the James River to be scrapped in Chesapeake, Va.

The 1962-built “Shirley Lykes” is the eighth obsolete ship to leave the James River reserve fleet since June 2004. The disposal contract for the ship was announced in December.

Tugboats towed the ship from the James River reserve fleet Wednesday morning.

Preparations for towing the “Shirley Lykes” must be made under the scrutiny of the U.S. Coast Guard. Towing can take place only when the preparations are deemed safe and seaworthy, and if weather permits. Maritime Administration officials emphasize that the process is thorough and that safety considerations may delay the towing schedule.
