APL STARTS EAST AFRICAN TRANSSHIPMENT SERVICE
APL is starting a transshipment service to and from East Africa, via the Mideast hub of Aden. The African service will connect with the carrier’s global linehaul services to the Americas, Asia and Europe.
From July 1, the East Africa service will call weekly at Mombasa, Dar Es Salaam and Aden. It will also provide extended links to landlocked regions of East Africa, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Zambia, Uganda and the Great Lakes region.
“The time is right to enter East Africa,” a spokesman for APL said, “Our customers have told us that they want global transportation services including also Kenya and Tanzania.”
Other APL services also call at ports in Africa — in Egypt and in Djibouti. APL did not mention plans to further expand its African coverage by adding connections to West Africa, North Africa or southern Africa.
