Aqaba seeks ground handling, logistics companies for cargo operations

Aqaba, a port town in southern Jordan, is soliciting applications from companies interested in operating the air cargo terminal at King Hussein International Airport, and a logistics park and container freight station.

The Aquaba Development Corp. will draw up a shortlist of bidders from the pool of applicants.

The airport and the logistics park are both located within a duty-free economic zone. There is growing interest in using the airport for regional freight delivery and distribution services, according to the Aqaba Development Corp.

Jordan’s trade with Aqaba is a key port of entry for goods headed to Iraq.

The solicitation is part of a move to privatize industry and move towards a more market-based economy. The Aqaba Container Terminal, for example, is managed by A.P. Moeller Terminals.

Companies must submit applications by May 14, with bid proposals expected to be issued in mid-June and contract awards scheduled for July.
