BNSF sets limits on container moves
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. has instituted a daily quota for eastbound container moves from Los Angeles in order to maintain service levels in the face of rising levels of imports.
The railroad moved up the effective date of its allocation process from July 1 to June 18 to keep its network from getting clogged. BNSF said in customer updates that daily limits on the number of containers that shippers and vessel operators can book will be based on railcar, facility and train demand. The action is limited to the railroad’s Hobart and Commerce rail heads, but BNSF said it reserves the right to implement the allocation process at other facilities as needed.
