Box volumes soar 54% at port of Seattle
The port of Seattle’s box volume soared 54 percent to 170,565 TEUs in January from 110,699 TEUs in the same month in 2004.
Mick Shultz, spokesman for the Pacific Northwest port, said the increase reflected diversions of cargo traffic from Californian ports, but also the effect of major retailers having set up distribution centers in the Puget Sound area.
The latest figures augur well for another year of rapid volume growth at the port of Seattle, which increased its container traffic by 20 percent to 1.8 million TEUs in 2004.
