Brazilian port to join CSI program

Brazil has enrolled the Port of Santos, the largest port in South America, in the U.S. Container Security Initiative,    and will selectively inspect cargo bound for the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

CSI is a maritime security program designed to push the concept of border inspections to the port of origin before a dangerous weapon of mass destruction can be smuggled into the country. CBP officers work alongside host nation authorities to identify suspicious containers for more scrutiny.

CSI is operational in 36 ports around the world.
