British Airways orders to boost cargo capacity

British Airways’ long-haul replacement program is expected to raise its cargo capacity to at least an extra 170 tons per day.

The airline last week placed firm orders for 12 Airbus A380s and 24 Boeing 787s for delivery from 2010 to 2014. There are also options for seven Airbus A380s and 18 Boeing 787s.

“The Boeing 787s in particular offer double the capacity of our current 767 fleet and will be used to start new routes and increase frequencies in existing markets,” said Andy Warwick, general manager business development, BA World Cargo.

“The order is welcome news and comes on the back of the recent five-year renewal of the wet lease covering our three B747-400 freighters.”
