BUCKERFIELD TO HEAD AMERICANÆS CARGO SALES IN EUROPE
American Airlines has appointed Steve Buckerfield to managing director for cargo sales in Europe.
Buckerfield, who replaces John Smith, joined American in 1990 and served as the carrier’s cargo sales manager in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Previously, he worked seven years for Emery Worldwide’s U.K. operations.
American said it moves about 100 million kilos of freight from Europe each year. Mark Najarian, the airline’s vice president of cargo sales and marketing, said Buckerfield has “played a key part in this achievement.”
American’s online European cargo service covers Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It also handles freight originating from off-line points, such as Ireland and the Netherlands.
The airline operates 266 flights a week from Europe using Airbus A300s and Boeing 767s and 777s. Its cargo capacity will increase further this year with the addition of 13 new Boeing 777s to its international fleet. Freight capacity from Europe for the summer schedule is 7 percent up compared to the same time last year, American said.
