BUSH ADMINISTRATION RELEASES 2002 SUBSIDIES ENFORCEMENT REPORT

The U.S. Trade Representative and the Commerce Department submitted to Congress its 2002 Subsidies Enforcement Report.

The report provides details into the U.S. government’s effort to monitor and enforce compliance against “the unfair use of foreign government subsidies” in particular industries, such as semiconductors, paper, fertilizer, cattle and textiles.

“Foreign subsidies are the most pernicious form of government intervention, disrupting the efficient market allocation of resources and distorting international trade patterns,” said U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick.

The report covers the progress of the World Trade Organization subsidy negotiations, ongoing international steel subsidy talks, the review of China’s subsidy commitments, and subsidies enforcement efforts taken by the U.S. government in the past year.

The report will be available online at http://www.ustr.gov and http://www.ita.doc.gov.
