BUSH PICKS MINETA AS TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY
President-elect George W. Bush has selected Norman Y. Mineta, the present Secretary of Commerce, to be Secretary of Transportation.
Mineta, whom President Clinton appointed in July to head Commerce, is the only Democratic selected thus far for Bush’s Cabinet.
A Japanese-American, Mineta, 69, represented California’s Silicon Valley in the House of Representatives for 21 years. He served as chairman of the House Public Works and Transportation Committee in 1993. After the Republican Congressional victories in 1994, Mineta resigned his seat to become a vice president of special business initiatives at Lockheed Martin Corp.
